We read in the life of St. Silouan: “Keep your mind in Hell and despair not.” This is very difficult. It requires a lot of boldness, a lot of courage. It takes a lot for someone to be initiated in these things in order to keep the mind in hell. That is, to believe that he is fit for hell and as if he is ready to fall into hell, but at the same time not to despair. The saints did that; we cannot understand these things. Unfortunately, we go to exactly the other extreme.

Today’s Christianity, in which one is comfortable, is very dangerous. That is, we keep only that which is pleasing, that which is easy to do and we do it. Anything that is inconvenient, anything that squeezes us out – that we avoid. And thus we have a Christianity of convenience. And woe: we don’t have the grace of God.
