The Canon of Saint Andrew of Crete

The Great Canon of St. Andrew of Crete is the longest canon of all the Orthodox offices, and is associated with Great Lent, since the only times it must be read in church are the first four nights of Great Lent and Matins on Thursday of the fifth week of Great Lent.  The theme is an urgent call to change one’s life. St. Andrew always mentions his own sin, placed in juxtaposition with God’s mercy, and uses hundreds of references to good and bad examples from the Old and New Testaments to convince himself to repent.

It consists of a variable number of parts, each called an Ode. The most common canons comprise eight Odes, numbered from one to nine, with Ode 2 omitted. Each Ode begins with an Irmos, which refers to one of the nine biblical hymns from the Old and New Testaments. This is followed by a variable number of Troparia, which are short hymns on the subject of the Canon. This T-Shirt features an extract from a dialogue between Saint Andrew and his soul from Ode 4’s Troparia, the main theme of which is the recognition of reality, of our own death and ultimately the Second Coming of Christ.
